R2 has announced the first deployment of its ODIN spectrum awareness system on U.S. Army armored platforms during a recent live maneuver exercise. The trial marked the first time passive radio frequency (RF) sensors have been integrated and operated on tanks and armored vehicles under field conditions.
According to the company, ODIN was installed, tested and validated over the course of more than a week at one of the Army’s largest training areas. The system was embedded into Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, where it operated on the move in live combat maneuver scenarios against first-person view (FPV) drones.
Unlike active sensing technologies, ODIN is passive and emits no signals, which R2 says provides situational awareness without revealing a platform’s position.
The exercise tested the platform’s ability to detect, geolocate and integrate data with existing Army command-and-control systems while under operational stress. R2 said the demonstration showed ODIN’s potential to enhance survivability and lethality for armored forces by providing early warning of unmanned aerial threats in contested environments.
The company added that ODIN has been shortlisted by the U.S. Army as a candidate passive RF solution for armored brigades, describing the exercise as a significant step toward future fielding decisions.
