As drone threats continue to evolve, interoperability has become one of the most important themes in counter-UAS. In Europe, NATO is attempting to address this challenge through common standards, interoperability exercises and technology frameworks designed to ensure that sensors, command-and-control systems and effectors from different nations can operate together.
The alliance’s recent Technical Interoperability Exercise (TIE 26), for example, brought together dozens of systems from multiple countries to test whether they could exchange data and integrate into a common command architecture. The exercise was explicitly focused on identifying solutions that could work within NATO’s broader defense ecosystem.
The Indo-Pacific faces many of the same drone threats, yet it lacks the institutional structures that make this kind of cooperation possible in Europe. There is no Pacific equivalent of NATO, no formal alliance-wide standardization process, and no single organization responsible for developing a common counter-drone architecture across the region.
Yet despite the absence of a NATO-style framework, there are signs that Indo-Pacific partners are moving in a similar direction.
The question is whether these efforts can ultimately create a regional approach to counter-UAS that is capable of supporting operations across one of the world’s most geographically demanding theaters.
