Communication from the Commission to the Council and the European Parliament on countering potential threats posed by drones sets out the European Union’s política on countering potential threats from non-cooperative unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones.
This policy is part of a comprehensive contra-drone package, which includes two handbooks offering practical guidance on key technical aspects:
- Handbook on UAS risk assessment and principles for physical hardening of buildings and sites.
- Handbook on UAS protection of Critical Infrastructure and Public Space: A five Phase approach for C-UAS stakeholders
Announced as a flagship action under the Commission’s “Drone Strategy 2.0 for a Smart and Sustainable Unmanned Aircraft Eco-System in Europe,” this package addresses several critical needs:
1. Comprehensive and Harmonized Policy Framework: The policy aims to create a unified approach to drone regulation across Europe, ensuring consistency and clarity in counter-drone measures.
2. Common Understanding of Procedures: It establishes standardized procedures to address and mitigate the evolving threats posed by drones effectively.
3. Consideration of Technological Developments: The policy considers the rapid advancements in drone technology, ensuring that countermeasures remain effective and up-to-date.
The EU aims to foster a safe and sustainable unmanned aircraft ecosystem through these efforts, enhancing security and public safety across member states.
