O Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has confirmed that it will soon conduct tests on a new air defence missile developed by Estonian firm, Frankenburg Technologies. This announcement followed discussions between Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defence, General Anatolii Klochko, and the leadership of the Estonian defence company.

Details on the missile remain limited. It is capable of targeting aerial threats at altitudes up to 2,000 metres and is specifically designed to counter UAS. Frankenburg Technologies’ CEO, Kusti Salm, commented on the price, noting:

“It’s a brand-new low-cost missile.”

A spokesperson for Frankenburg Technologies noted that if the trials prove successful, plans would be made for production within Ukraine:

“We are considering future domestic production alongside exploring funding sources for this project,” they said.

Frankenburg Technologies’ official website includes limited technical specifics but notes their mission to make missile systems “ten times more affordable, a hundred times faster to produce, and in quantities far exceeding current industry capabilities.”

The goal of the missile’s development is to offer cost-effective anti-drone defence at a fraction of typical missile expenses. Ukraine anticipates the first shipment of these Estonian-made missiles in the coming months.

If successful, this missile could become yet another tool in the Ukrainian arsenal to counter Russian UAS, comparable to anti-aircraft FPV drones. Ukrainian officials see these trials as an essential step to enhance their anti-drone capabilities.

Ukraine’s recent collaboration with Thales on missile production demonstrates a strategic focus on diversifying its defence partnerships and expanding its technological edge.
