Raytheon, a subsidiary of RTX, has been awarded a $478 million contract by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to supply additional GEM-T missiles to Germany. This contract is aimed at replenishing the Patriot missiles Germany provided to Ukraine. Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway have also committed to co-financing the procurement, underscoring their support for Ukraine.
Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, highlighted the benefits of this multi-national procurement approach, noting the economic advantages and faster acquisition timelines enabled by the pre-negotiated NSPA framework. This deal not only bolsters the missile inventories of participating European nations but also enhances NATO’s interoperability and cooperative defence capabilities.
Stacy A. Cummings, NSPA General Manager, emphasized the contract’s role in reinforcing European industrial capacities and achieving cost-effective multinational solutions through close Euro-Atlantic cooperation. The GEM-T missiles are integral to the Patriot Advanced Capability 2 (PAC-2) system, which is critical for air and missile defence in eight European nations and Ukraine. This system continues to be a cornerstone of defence against advanced threats, including cruise missiles and enemy aircraft.
The GEM-T missiles supplied under this contract represent an enhancement over traditional missile interceptors, specifically designed for defeating tactical ballistic missiles within the Patriot system. While traditional interceptors offer broader capabilities against a variety of ameaças aéreas, GEM-T missiles are optimized for high-speed, high-precision engagements, offering increased effectiveness in the complex threat environment of modern conflict zones.
