Shield AI, a venture-backed technology company, and defence giant RTX announced a new partnership this week aimed at integrating Shield’s advanced software with RTX’s hardware platforms. The collaboration will initially focus on two key projects: a cutting-edge sensor suite and an “operational weapon,” according to the joint release.

The collaboration is focused on delivering enhanced mission autonomy for the US and allied defence forces. The partnership seeks to accelerate the deployment of intelligent, operationally effective systems on the modern battlefield.

RTX plans to integrate Shield AI’s Hivemind software into its systems to deliver what will be the first operational weapon powered by Networked Collaborative Autonomy (NCA). This emerging technology brings together real-time coordination, resilience, and combat-proven firepower. The entire project will be funded by the two companies themselves, without relying on government investment.

RTX Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Chris Calio said, “AI and autonomy continue to enhance the performance of our products”. He continued, “In partnership with Shield AI, we will deliver critical new solutions that will create a competitive advantage for our customers.”

Shield AI CEO Gary Steele also commented, “RTX’s defence systems paired with Hivemind, which delivers mission autonomy for intelligent, collaborative operations, create powerful new capabilities for the warfighter”. “This collaboration reflects how the defense ecosystem is evolving – bringing the best of autonomy and hardware to bear on national security challenges.”

To support rapid product development for existing MTS customers, Shield AI will integrate its Visual Detection and Ranging (ViDAR) software with RTX’s Multi-Spectral Targeting System (MTS). The goal is to enable automated, AI-driven sensor autonomy capable of identifying and responding to maritime and airborne swarm threats.

By ensuring systems are secure, reliable, traceable, and governable, this partnership aligns with the core principles set out by the US Department of Defence. It also highlights the shared commitment of RTX and Shield AI to advancing autonomous defence technologies in a responsible and effective manner.
