Saab has introduced Nimbrix, its first missile designed specifically to counter small unmanned aerial systems. The system is being developed in response to the growing use of drones on the battlefield and the challenge of countering them in a cost-effective manner.
Nimbrix is described as a fire-and-forget missile with a range of up to 5 kilometers. It features an active seeker for target tracking, a hard-kill warhead and an air-burst mode designed to defeat drone swarms. Saab says the missile is intended to combine these features with a small footprint and low cost.
“Nimbrix is our answer to the unmanned aerial threats which have escalated in the last few years,” said Stefan Öberg, head of Saab’s Missile Systems business unit. “It is cost-effective which is critical given the proliferation of UAS on the battlefield. Nimbrix benefits from our long experience of air defence, together with an agile way of responding to new needs.”
The ground-based missile can operate independently or as part of a wider air defense system, according to Saab. It can be mounted on vehicles or installed in fixed positions to meet different operational requirements. The company highlighted affordability as a key factor in allowing larger numbers of the system to be deployed for wider coverage.
Saab said discussions with potential customers are underway, with first deliveries planned for 2026.
